DailyApps: Hack Attack : How to Create aXXo Quality DVD Rips

  • Mike Ryan · 1 year ago
Heh, I love aXXo rips. They are spot on awesome and the fact that his name is now branded upone a method is just cool.
  • David Guinan · 1 year ago
Thanks for this always wondered how they get the rips so small my goog quality ones are always well over a gig thank you
  • Multi-Monitor Computer · 1 year ago
axxo was the bomb! I wondered where he went. I use DIVX. Anyway, your blog is great! I will definitely be back!
  • Thomas · 1 year ago
There is nothing like autoGK as far as ease and quality.
I'm always travelling so there was no other option that backing up all my DVD's to my portable hard drive, in order to always have my favorite movies with me.

    Great guide
  • Chris P · 1 year ago
XviD lets you do 2-pass encoding, it takes longer but you get the best picture quality for the smallest file size.
  • saga · 1 year ago
It's nice to have high quality rips. However, if one is doing this themselves why not make DVD-R copies? Pretty much all computers have DVD-R drives these days and the media isn't that much more expensive than CD-R's either. Add to that a person can still play it on their comp or their DVD player on a larger screen with minimal compression (if any) needed.
  • David Guinan · 1 year ago
Saga: because copying dvds is illegal so technically you cant just sling a blank disc in and if you was going away on holiday and you wanted to take say 10 movies with you and your laptop you would run out of space in your bagage taking 10 boxes or risk damaging them in plastic wallets where all you need is 7 gig on your hard drive and you can carry 10 movies anyway. you may also want to edit or batch movies if your into that
  • Jack · 1 year ago
Great post, I can sometimes not find movies for my Media Center PC online, this way I can rent them and still keep it in my Movie library while not losing space or quality, awesome site, every hack attack Rocks!

I used FairUSE Wizard till now for ripping DVDs into Quality-700MB rips.

I'm perfectly satisfied with FairUSE, as it does all by itself.
With that, there is no need for DVD Decrypter.

You just have to select the DVD Drive and set the conversion rules (as we did in AutoGK).

But, the tutorial is nice, and I'll surely use this, if ever, FairUSE fails.

N.B. A tutorial on ripping DVDs using FairUSE, could be found on my blog.

    Thanks for the guide!
    You really helped me out!

While I too love my xvid rips. I've found that using the newer h.264 codec even for normal dvd rips (normal being DVD-R not HD/Blueray which is where the h.264 codec was really intended for) the video quality is far superior. I've made a side by side copy. autogk set to 700MB and used Staxrip http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/ set to encode a 700MB file and the quality was still better. Like noticably better.

While I still use the Xvid codec when it's called for via site rules, I encoded to h.264 for my personal collection.

B.T.W. I only used the 700MB setting for staxrip for the side by side comparison I still prefer a slightly larger encode for quality settings and use the mp4 container for compatability with a larger base of devices.
  • varun · 1 year ago
    Quite a method dude...
I wonder why did u choose to tell us.. U could have been the next AxxO and earned a millions :))
  • ArchAngel · 1 year ago
I am curious to know if compressing down to 700mb loses any quality and would a 1080P LCD show these imperfections.
  • FireFox · 1 year ago
Archangel, a 1080 vertical lines screen would have to upscale the whole image. In facto you will see 'errors' larger. Ofcourse quality is lost. However this is only visible if you really go and compare still images of the same sequence.
  • FireFox · 1 year ago
I like this tutorial, really I do, but what about us linux guys? Is there a similar way to compress to h264 in let's say Ubuntu. I'd be happy to see that:)
  • xroblade · 1 year ago
I think you did axxo a favor doing this cause he wont get prosecuted if everyone is doing it. Just like the music industry :)
  • projectgrafix · 1 year ago
Yea man I am also a fan of aXXo and download without reading comments, his name is enough! Thanks for telling how we can make such fine DVD rips, I was thinking to do so but didn't knew where to start.
  • Dave · 1 year ago
In Step 2 you didn't say what to do if the copy protection comes up with something. For example this DVD i just threw in reads: CSS/CPPM

    Any ideas?
  • someguy · 1 year ago
    Or you could just use DVD Shrink 3.1. . . . .

It's really simple to use, and I've been able to burn any dvd with it.
  • James · 1 year ago
Hey! I'm from New Zealand (that little island next to Australia that we like to call a country). :)

I'm a programmer in Visual Basic and I'm wondering if you'd be interested in me creating a way to automate all of this, hit me back on this. I'll check back weekly. :)
  • Cybersupam · 1 year ago
This is very simple to use, but still quality gets some way lower than axxo,..In this way axxo is great.
I also use Yasa VOB-AVI converter n select its size to 700 mb,..as well nice tools like Vidsplitter n Divx Converter
  • Cybersupam · 1 year ago
Yup again really Vidsplitter is also a free n easy tool to compress VOB files to 700mb avi files. Thats what I found lets us to customise size of the output file, n the remaining it does itself. So give a try to it!
  • Bill Williams · 1 year ago
Just use FairUse wizard. It gives you all the tools of the mentioned software, all rolled up in n00b format.
  • rippr · 1 year ago
Yeah that or use Fairuse Wizard

  • shrek412 · 1 year ago
    many many thanx..............
  • ClaudioX · 1 year ago
    How about some Mac software?
  • ONe321 · 1 year ago
I just converted scary movie 4, the quality is great but there is a probelm with the sound, the film is lagging behind the sound which means that you can hear the sound before you the movie on the screen,
  • Kekabu · 1 year ago
i used the autoGk software but the output still not the same like axxo. the quality still lower (sharpness & clear) . usually axxo version got the DIVX logo on the bottom right corner .. mine one dont have
  • Robert · 1 year ago
once i have copied the dvd to my hard drive,
can i just select all and burn to a dual layer disc?
or is part 2 an important step?
im not looking to compress, ill be using dual layer discs.
  • Tanay · 1 year ago
Thanks a lot for your post, it really helped a lot.

I was wondering that normally the movie is in parts, many VOB and IFO files.

So how to merge them into 1 file like aXXo does?
  • Curtis · 1 year ago
@ ROBERT - I have a program called DVDFab, which copies the disc and can burn it all in one step, the quality remains high, so there's no need for the second step. Try and download the full version from a torrent site. The full version is called DVDFab Platinum. I have burned a fair amount of DVD's and have never had problems with quality.
  • Michael Garmahis · 1 year ago
I doubt that automatic gives you perfect quality, it's all about tweaking settings.
  • Tarquin · 1 year ago
My rip did not have an IFO file, what now?
  • Zero · 1 year ago
    Thanks for a great info.
  • Dibyajyoti Deb · 1 year ago
pretty nice article up there, i wanna know will leaving anything unchanged in advanced option change the aspect ratio.
How to crop the file to smaller resolution like 640X480 or 546 X 328

    Hey this is axxos blog
    http://axxoreleasetoday.blogspot.com
    check it out !
  • Dustin · 1 year ago
Nice, I tried it out with one of my DVD's.. everything went fine except for the audio syncing. In the beginning of the DVD it looks okay but later, the lips of the people don't go together with what they're saying.. like a sort of lag between audio and video. I don't know what's wrong here. But thanks for sharing.
  • Andy · 1 year ago
    aXXo actually uses DivX compression
  • REX · 1 year ago
This is great. It's just what I was looking for. Thank you.
  • superawesomecooldude · 1 year ago
Are you sure he uses this method? I tried AutoGK but it doesn't produce the same quality as aXXo's. Maybe aXXo uses blue-ray discs because AutoGK doesn't produce the beautiful quality of aXXo from dvd rips
  • cybersupam · 1 year ago
after a long time my comment here again....
I just downloaded Edison Force created by axxo from the net...then I also rented the original version of Edison Force DVD n ripped with this process. But surprisingly axxo's file n my ripped file were not of much differences...n unlike other axxo's files I downloaded from net this Edison Force seemed to be of lower quality...anyone knows why?
  • foxtrot_alpha · 1 year ago
wait till you see what vc-1 vp6 vp7 and snow
    can do
use this Mencoder in place of auto gk
    (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEncoder)
    or
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffmpegGUI

go for vbr audio and downsampling of 44100 hz(dvd's are generally48000 hz)

    cbr(constant bitrate)
    vbr (variable bitrate)
    abr(absolute bitrate)
axxo rips are better since he uses better opensource programs
    there lot more advanced settings
k lite is good because of ffdshow filters..
download latest fork (ffdshow tryouts) ffdshow isint updated now
  • SparkyFlary · 1 year ago
I think this is what aXXo uses but i found a better way to make 700 MB copies of DVDs. I you use FairUse and set it to PS3 and set the size to 700 MB then youll get better quality results than that of aXXo. It's because H264/AVC is better than XVID which aXXo encodes to.
  • Mr. Briggs · 1 year ago
Ain't it illegal to spread these things around? Including methods...

[runs to MPAA to tell on this guy]

    [stops halfway and turns back]

On second thought, it's good that these things are around. XD
  • Someone · 1 year ago
Mr. Briggs, your a dork, go get a life and take you worthless postings with you.
  • Eric · 1 year ago
Before i saw this post i made up my own process to rip a dvd and they never came out in the right language.

I just tried your process and this time the movie came out with 5 seconds of one language, 5 seconds of another (same 5 secs as previous just different language), and 5 seconds of another. And it repeated like this for the whole movie.

Idk why it would do this. Any suggestions?

hey i tried converting use those software with same specified settings. its frame width starts with 320. it should be with 720 when we open the window.

im not getting good quality picture. i think we need to find better dvdrip software.

100% sure, AXXO is not using this software.
  • AVI LOVER · 1 year ago
    Hey, guys...
just download Mediainfo, after installing right click on the axxo file if u have, n select Mediainfo. Now see wat it shows.
Surprising it shows tat the avi file was encoded with Virtualdub, n divx codec was used. In the same way Autogk files also shows as encoded by Virtualdub.
Question is wat axxo really uses?
  • se7en · 1 year ago
Believe me and I mean that seriously

*** There is NO WAY for anyone of us to get even close to aXXo's or any other superior quality DVD rip group's quality just by using such a noob tool as Auto Gordian Knot in fact is !!!!!!! (unless you add a little mysterious spice to it) ;)))

This is the avi information of one of the aXXo's movie called Passengers. Instead of bothering with the Auto Gordian Knot try its much more advanced brother *** the Gordian Knot Rip Pack v.0.35.0 *** which is btw higly customizable + *** Gordian Knot Codec Pack v.1.9 *** Find and Install these two LEARN THEM and you'll be much much closer to your goal. But trust me - never mind what you'll do your rips and his or other PROs' rips won't still be looking the same. Sorry for saying it but... trust me I know what I'm talking about ;) . U know it's not just about you download some smart soft that will do everything for you. It's about years of experience and the perfect knowledge of avisynth as a frameserver and of course of all of its plugins and virtualdub's filters as well and much much more that these guys have. On the top of all of that - there are for example free VDM filters and of course even much more perfect and powerful - the commercial ones. And these groups are not just a bunch of dumb people which aren't able to edit them or write down their own ones. And ... bare in mind that even a hardware could be involved.

  • samuels295 · 3 months ago
Hey..... I accept your comment........ But dont say that we can't make similar videos like professional rippers........

I have done it aswell............ It does not depend on the tools you use..........
It depends up on the source video which you rip..................

If the original video is poor in quallity then result will be poor for sure........

Do you know which type of videos are riped by the professional torrent uploaders?

They dont rip from an ordinary DVD........ They rip from HIGHRES DVD's ............

Check out the HIGHRES movies and its file size from the below link...........

    http://thepiratebay.org/top/207

If the source file is HIGHRES then there is nothing impossible ..............

If u have a HIGHRES DVD , even u can make it , it's as easy as fart!ng................

So it hardly depend on what tool you use.............................

If you have anything to say then reply me at my mail id: samuels295@hotmail.com
  • Hamza · 12 months ago
    Hey thanks a lot!
Process takes quite long but in the end its all worth it.
    The quality is brilliant!
  • Sam · 12 months ago
Wait a minute, if you're the one doing the ripping, then why bother making it itsy bitsy in file size? The only real reason for these small file sizes is bandwidth preservation since, after all, storage is cheap. Me? I just rip to vobs most of the time and then buy more storage when its needed. I don't keep backups of all the digital data, so I'm bound to eventually lose some movies and/or TV shows, but I really don't care.

For those who want to try another alternative (for Mac too!) that has a great 264 encoder, check out HandBrake. It's command line for Ubuntu and works like a champ.
  • Jacob · 12 months ago
Umm i hate to sound like a douche but theres an app called "Handbrake" this is available on all OS's and all u need to do is click one button and 2 hours later u have the movie on ur hard disk soo yeah. u all kinda need to rethink this.
  • viisva · 12 months ago
hey guys, i tried with single vob file which has 1gb, it got converted with perfect quality n sound by using this AutoGK ,

but when i try to make as like that guys screen, i get bad quality bcos width is very small.

so i dont understand what exact prob is with. What i feel is, since we are getting perfect quality for single vob file, then why we cant get perfect quality as per screen...

Experts pl try something and help us... im searching in other few sites too, if i found any solution, sure i'll save all dude's time :)

Hey thanks a lot! This guide produced a great rip! We shouldn't always need to really on people/groups like axxo to make rips, they can't rip everything. This is definitely a good technique if you wish to do it on your own or for dvds that you can't find elsewhere.

Your tutorial is good. I am now ripping a dvd which my friend lend me. The movie is "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". Although the DVD came pirated and not the original DVD, I find the motion picture is clear, so I decided to rip it to give me small amount of files 700mb. I googled the aXXo tools he is using and found your site... Really works.. Thanks...

  • Edward Cullen · 9 months ago
Here is a better and easier way....get fairuse wizard 2.9 choose the "H.264/Ac3/AVI, very slow" setting. Set your size to 700MB, uncheck "show only preffered resolutions" and select the highest resolution, then you're good to go. It's actually way way better than axxo quality, just takes a while to encode 11 hours somtimes. You can also choose the "H.264/Ac3/AVI,slow" setting which goes a bit faster if you need the speed.

But here is the tip that matters most no matter what codec/software you decide to use.

Resolution > compression ratio. Don't downsize the resolution to get a better compression ratio. Resolution makes all the difference in terms of sharpness and clarity, when you downsize in the computer you lose a lot of sharpness. If you keep the resolution close to the native resolution you'll get much better results. the higher resolution makes the compression artifacts appear smaller and less noticeable. Compression ratios above 600:1 is where movies start to show noticable artifacts, just stay under that and you'll be good.
  • WereStrike · 9 months ago
Well I ran acrossed one dvd no matter what I do the audio and video won't line up. I have done hundreds of these and this is the first one I have had problems with using AutoGK any suggestions on fixing it?
  • AdEpt · 9 months ago
Nice tut. Se7en is correct, aXXo encodes with XVid. He of course also puts more time into his torrents than the 20 minutes it takes to do this. I imagine adding many many filters and using specific programs to make the videos of superior quality. He also doesn't use surround sound and I suggest you dont either, due to larger size... if a vid is going to be 700mb the focus is on video looking its best and the audio will be just bearable. aXXo consistenly also uses MP3 audio so I know he converts it because many of the movies he's done only have AC3 tracks. Rem acu tetigesti se7en, this tut sheds some light for those that are new to this but there's so much more complexity to it when a professional, the professional, does it. We can only try to come close.
  • DooN · 8 months ago
Isn't this all a little pointless? I like being able to watch movies on my computer and iPhone as much as the next guy, but does anyone have a good solution for a straight across DVD copy? I have two Dual Layer DVD-R drives, and could easily get a spool of DL-DVD -Rs, so how do I copy the original DVD to the DVD-R? It's not like doing it this way is any more illegal than ripping to AVI, I would just rather watch it on my home theater system instead of trying to make it look "ok" with a handful of different apps.

If you have Nero as your burning software get DVDshrink as it will utilise nero to burn a copy of the selected dvd in one action. DVDshrink will rip the dvd to your hard drive and then burn the ripped files to a blank dvd-r, If you have two DVD-roms in your computer you can select in the options to rip the move in one drive and then burn onto your blank media in the other drive in one action. This will save you time and unnecessary waiting and swapping of discs

The only difference between any other guy and aXXo is that aXXo chooses to share what he rips and we don't. Simple isn't it? It is just that aXXo probably has a large movie collection that makes him as famous as he really is!!

I can say with personal experience that any software that has the right codecs can rip a DVD perfectly. It is simply the knowledge of settings that is required. It makes a big difference just fiddling around with some of the settings in those advanced menus that you find.

Just a few pointers for all you guys ripping DVDs out there:
    1. Keep the Resolution high. keeping the width to around 690px is just fine.
    2. Keep the bitrate reasonable. this makes quite a big difference in the sharpness of your video. it should be above 900kb/sec for good quality and around 768kb/sec should do if you want it just about average.
    3. Make sure the audio you use is 128kb/sec MP3 or higher. AC3 is the sweetest way to go but then it means a larger file size. Usually 192kbps is a sweet spot, but then you might even be satisfied with 128kbps. anything lower than that and you're better off watching it on a VHS!
    4. Unless you have a slow PC, go for 2-pass encoding. This doesn't really improve the quality drastically but it greatly reduces the chances of dropped frames and out-of-sync audio.
    5. If you can adjust the framerate of the output video then make sure it is atleast 23fps. Anything lower and your video gets choppy. When I say atleast 23 it means unless you have no other option, try not to use 23fps. 25fps is usually a sweet spot but some like to go higher.
    6. Always use Xvid rather than DivX. Xvid gives better compression rates at the same quality and usually DVD players which support DivX can play most Xvid encoded files.

Use DVDFab Been using it for years and it is the best. It is one program and it does everything in one process. Rip, Converts and deletes Temp files. No out of sync audio or anything.

I recommend you use the setting that piyush2202 did:

Wow.... way to get complex. Just use dvd fab, and burn with nero. Takes half the time and is SUPER easy.

true, but it's not free, and sometimes using a couple programs, and a little extra time provides better results than the one click programs

we want to rip to hdd, not to copy on dvd. see the tutorial i have posted below, until proof of the contrary this is the simpler and most efficient way.

Wow....leading me by the hand is sooo hard, lol. Just go out to Best Buy and pay for a program, ha ha. Dude, this is for free and for people who like to learn stuff. Dvd fab sucks! You have to buy at least 2 of the products to get it to work and there are 4 in total being sold separately. Furthermore, it says it is for a subscription so you will have to purchase again in a year or 2. It's nice that your mommy buys that for you, but for the rest of us, we want to learn and do it for free.

A well explained tutorial, however the part where you advice to add *.IFO files, that part is not explained correctly, I had to try with two or three IFOs till I was able to figure out that it doesn't matter try each and every one till you get the desired movie length in the next window. May be I didn't understand it correctly. Still an awesome tutorial, "5 STAR" from my side.

I tried this with the movie The Island. The original VOB file from after i ran it thru DVD Decrypter was 6.4gb, then i put it thru AutoGK and sized it to 2.4gb. I played both files simultaneously side by side, the original is soooo much clearer and better quality. Not sure what to do? Sacrifice the quality and have smaller files or buy a huge external 2tb hard drive and keep the large files with great dvd quality. Suggestions?
